i really liked this one! cox did a really good job of slowly unfurling the extremely technical details as they became relevant, instead of one horrible infodump near the beginning, and has a real gift for humanizing little anecdotes that illustrate the concept. he's also dryly funny in a very british way, eg the transition between one paragraph describing a very talented olive oil salesman and his lifestyle to how that olive oil processing covered up drug labs with the sentence "But Catanzariti didn't stay with olives; he pivoted instead to methamphetamine." i loooooove reading about how the drug trade gets around customs. i love edge cases and figuring out why things fail. i truly think some of the finest materials engineers of our time are out there trying to figure out how to get cocaine into australia.

this is deeply reported in a way that's very different from a lot of popsci and pop-history books that annoy me: this is NOT a book where it feels like the author is simply padding out a wikipedia page, supplemented with articles he's already written. he's been on this beat since 2016 and it shows: he has quotes from hundreds of people on many sides of the drug war. something i also appreciate is that cox is not automatically, rabidly pro-cop; he does not gloss over the very real tortures and kidnappings and all the other nasty realities of the global drug trade, and frequently shows how much overreach and entrapment took place during this whole endeavor. i particularly liked a chapter where he flipped back and forth from various law enforcement officials assuring him they of course complied with all relevant privacy laws and blacklisted anyone using it for simple secure communications, and lawyers telling cox "no the cops very much did spy on my privileged communication with my clients and i know this because these texts came up in court". also gratifying to read about some cases overturned or thrown out, in the odd case a judge decided it looked too much like entrapment.

i feel like i devoured this book SO fast but it's a solid 352 pages in hardcover. i also had to wait a good two months on the libby holds lists so there is strong interest in this book! good for cox!

how did i find this book: it's austin underscore walker's fault. they used to be coworkers at vice and cox and three others broke off last year to found 404 Media, which has had an absolutely crazy amount of real-world impact for the size (again! four people!) and how long they've been around. rip vice. wish u did better by your people.

watched Hercules (1997, dir. Clements & Musker) with my bestie's five year old. i did not grow up with disney movies and don't really have a nostalgic affinity for them but this shit holds up! i like how meg has the silhouette of a greek vase

powerwash simulator has a new free DLC out! we get to go to the aquarium and wash some exhibits and wash the research submarine!!! VERY soothing. took me a good solid two hour podcast episode to clean the exhibits.

the temporary summer event in genshin impact is very darling this year-- there are big indie game vibes and unlocking every chest is a little more complicated or has a little bit more story attached than usual. very excited to see if this continues with the next big update that introduces a whole new land.

i also like that they've picked An Art Style to work with-- everything is very toy-like or origami. not that genshin doesn't have a distinct art style, but playing around with something less realistic is fun!

☀️Summer☀️:

-I don’t consider Muppet babies as cannon, BUT I love Animal’s and Summer’s bestie dynamic from the show! I like to think Floyd and Teeth tried to put Animal through daycare when they stopped temporarily on their journey to save up money for food/petrol/bnb’s and such. But Animal being Animal, he was banned after the first day when he brought in a family of wild rabbits into the class - which everyone, students included, found very chaotic, all expect for Summer who giggled happily when the rabbits left paint paw prints on some of her drawing paper. 

The two remained besties after that, Floyd had to plan MANY play dates on Animal’s instant nagging behalf 

-While Animal of course goes on to be a drummer in the band Summer goes on to art school. The two lost contact once Floyd and Teeth hit the road and Summer moved back to Antarctica temporarily, but once the Electric Mayhem rose to fame Summer recognised Animal and got back in contact with him. They met up again as young adults and despite some initial awkwardness, they became instantly close again (on a side note I hc that Animal and Summer are around the same age, in their early/mid twenties)

-I also like to hc that Animal, pretty much from day one, had the biggest honking puppy crush on Summer because she was the only kid in daycare who laughed at the wild bunnies he caught and brought in. You know how he acted with Nora in the series? He’s basically like that with Summer, they love each other very much. He’s the type of boyfriend to uproot an entire cluster of flowers and hand them to Summer, and Summer thinks it’s adorable 

-Speaking of Summer falls under Animals official protection. You mess with her you mess with him, good luck and prayers to anyone who does 

-After getting into contact again with Animal Summer moved into the city to be closer to him and for wider work opportunities. Coincidentally, she ends up working at the studio creating set pieces and props 

-She used to be babysat by Piggy, and while Piggy still hits Summer with her blunt quips Summer is totally immune to her sass. Summer views her in a sort of “gossip ready auntie”, though she knows better then to dare make a comment like that so long as she breaths air, aware that Piggy does not like to discuss her age. 

-Additionally, she also gets along quite well with Deadly and Gloria Estefan, who she treats as a little sibling. She’s more prone to being sassy and more laid back with Deadly who actually finds her a welcoming presence considering the chaos he has to put up with with other company 

-Outside of Animal her other best friend is Skeeter. I hc Animal as only a handful of years older than Scooter and Skeeter, so Summer and Skeeter are pretty close in age

-Naturally as a penguin Summer prefers colder weather and has a taste for fish based or salty foods

-She likes to collect shiny rocks, type of girlfriend to give Animal a funky looking rock she found on a walk. Animal keeps all of the little treasures Summer gives him, ALL of them 

🛍Piggy🛍:

-I said this in an older post and based of what Piggy said in the later episodes of the 2015 show, but grew up with eight older brothers and her twin sister Poogy on a farm in Texas. Her parents were hoping for boys to help carry out chores and were unimpressed when instead they got twin girls, named them Piggy and Poogy out of spite. Hates her family so much you got no idea, on the rare occasion she tolerates Poogy, in small, minuscule doses 

-Before becoming a star she did many small, part time jobs after she left the family farm the moment she was old enough to, all of which she refuses to admit to having actually done. Such as waitressing, taxi driver, shop clerk, infomercials (based on that one but in ep 1 of Muppets Tonight) and babysitting 

-One of the kids she happened to babysit was Summer. When Piggy moved out from the family farm she was still a young, very inexperienced farm girl in the big, imposing city, so Summer’s childlike admiration towards her was a great source of comfort for her. So much that Piggy to this day might still have a teenie, tiny little soft spot for her (she loves Summer a whole lot more then her nephews Andy and Randy)

-She adores Robin so so much, she’s practically his son 

-She can actually be pretty good at giving pep talks and genuine advice, but most of the time she has a bad habit of throwing money at emotional problems in an effort to solve them 

-Finds a surprisingly strong friendship in Janice, the resident hipster. While Piggy at first thought of Janice as…well, annoying, Janice is very, very hard to actually dislike. I like to think their friendship blossomed after Piggy tried to go to aerial contortion classes, where afterwards in an effort to help Piggy form connections with people Janice somehow ropes her into her daily meditation sessions. Piggy does NOT like it, and finds herself wishing to tolerate Floyd’s smug jabs rather then listen to Janice prattle about the importance of breathing deeply. But Janice is persistent, and very open with praise even when Piggy messes up, which Piggy may or may not be very appreciate of. 

In thanks for the meditation lessons, which are shockingly very affective at helping her stress levels, Piggy begins to invite Janice out to lunch dates and shopping trips, and gossip sessions in her private dressing room. It’s only fair right? She’s only paying Janice back for all she’s done 

-Contrary to Janice, Piggy and Floyd are sworn rivals. Floyd is often the on the receiving end of Piggy’s karate chops and Piggy is Floyd’s number one victim of smug jabs and nicknames. The two can’t stand each other - but deep down, the two understand each other on a very deep level. Floyd and Piggy don’t feel a need to put up an act or mask infront of each other, and are free to show their more snappy, curt sides. The two are often quicker to catch on to when the other is upset then anyone else (Piggy and Floyd would rather die than ever admit that to anyone though) 

-Deep down I can see Piggy being pretty insecure, hence why she surrounds herself with such lavish, expensive things. She considers Deadly, Janice and Kermit to be the closest adult friends she has and the closest thing to family 

-There have been many iterations of Piggy’s and Kermit’s romantic relationship,  and while the 2015 was rough at times with it I did like how the show portrayed them towards the end of the series. I like to think of the two as together, happily co parenting Robin (Inspired by how Robin called her Aunt Miss Piggy at the end of the series, that was so cute!)

-Hits like a semi truck. As a kid her older brothers picked on her and her sister Poogy constantly, so Piggy took up karate to prepare for the blessed day she can enact her revenge. If she wasn’t happy being a celebrity Piggy could 100% get into law enforcement

what do you think santana’s coming out would have been like if she hadn’t been outed?

Oh man that's a question and a half. I was legit so thrown off by that. Not in a bad way! Always appreciate Santana questions, always. I just spend so much time being mad about what actually happened and being absolutely appalled by Glee dropping the ball this badly, it's hard to even approach the topic without that in mind. Even while thinking about this I caught myself wanting to curse the canon events out multiple times. But I'll show restraint and pretend, for a few blissful minutes, that season 3 doesn't exist the way it does. This post is going to be more of what I would have liked to see instead of what realistically could have happened because Glee lost out on my willingness to care about their established boundaries when they vomited The Outing scene onto my screen.

In my ideal world, Santana would have been allowed the baby steps she deserved. Sure, she was way deep in the closet in season 2 but by the end we see progress. She's so clearly isn't ready yet and that's fine, in this timeline we're not pressuring her in any way. It's early season 3 and she and Brittany are officially together but only they know it. It's a bit of an open secret in the Glee Club, too, but everyone, and I mean everyone knows better than to think it's any of their business. Around the time of one of the the Troubletones rehearsals Mercedes catches Brittana making out and Santana freaks out, initially. Brittany reassures her that Mercedes is their friend and it's fine and later we get a Sancedes scene. Santana at first tries to deflect but Mercedes lets her know that she isn't there to judge or anything, she just gives the advice that Santana would be happier if she embraced herself and all that usual Glee speech. After the Troubletones WRONGFULLY lose Sectionals and Quinn gets the girls back and Santana sees how ND welcomes them with open arms, she makes a decision.

It feels safer to make a public Glee announcement first. They sing a duet with Brittany and Britt does the talking because Santana is more comfortable letting the song (Melissa Etheridge's Come to My Window, maybe?) speak for her. No one is shocked but they're all supportive, especially the people who matter (*cough* the girls and Klaine *cough*). Will tries to make a speech, blah blah, it's just a wholesome scene. Ideally a Kurtana scene follows because this is my headcanon I do what I want.

Now people who already sort of knew are in the clear but it's limited to the Glee Club and none of them blabber to other students, particularly not in the hallway because they're good people who love and support Santana. Based on Santana's heartbreaking "I haven't even told my parents yet" I'm going to choose to infer that she was thinking about it. She's terrified and needs a Pierce family dinner, together with a supportive Whitney and Pierce Pierce to convince her she's ready for this. We get to see the actual scene, around Christmas time, with Gloria Estefan and Dr. Lopez and it's emotional but cathartic. They're with Santana, no matter what, though her dad does have an ominous line about Alma. Not in a rude way but in a way when a parent fears what might await their kid. Santana staunchly refuses the subject of Abuela and asks her parents not to say anything to anyone.

The school year goes on. Valentine's Day comes around and following some homophobic shenanigans at McKinley and Figgins revealing the same double standard as he did in Heart, somehow, Santana decides to take a stand. She kisses Brittany very publicly in school one day and maybe we do get a slightly altered version of the Heart God Squad storyline. Except she gets to beat up Joe because I said so. All is relatively well. Santana and Brittany are now practically out to the school and Santana shows concern every now and then, but she feels lighter. This timeline actually deals with the fact that she wouldn't suddenly have no fears about being out and jerks exist, but it's easier that she did it on her own terms and not through a political ad.

Regionals rolls around and Dave is outed. I'm sorry David in this timeline your fate is unfortunately still the same. We get the attempt but thankfully Dave survives and recovers. Santana visits him in the hospital, they have a conversation and it makes her realize that life's too short to be terrified of who she is. The final puzzle piece in this portion of her coming out story? Abuela Alma. And so Santana goes to her grandmother, tells her about having had time to reflect and the coming out goes much the same as it did in the only valid IKAG scene. And Alma rejects her much the same, breaking Santana's heart and causing her to lash out at the people who have been supporting her these past few months. After the initial shock of just having been disowned, she picks herself up and thinks about Dave and how she can't let others' opinions of her define her life. Santana's clearly shaken from the experience and it gets brought up time and again but she marches on.

Santana starts college and decides she's going to be upfront from the first moment on. She tells people about her girlfriend, how proud of her she is, how much she loves Brittany. When they break up, the strength fades as Santana already wasn't feeling the whole Louisville vibe. Canon events ensue, and when she moves to New York she gets to truly just be herself and live her sexuality for the first time. That doesn't just mean sleeping around, thought some of that too. When she gets together with Dani and meets her cool queer friends, Santana feels at peace. It took a minute, but she's fine with casually dropping the word lesbian and introducing herself as, well, herself.

I know that last bit wasn't necessary for the coming out journey itself but it's good for my soul to think about. I can't say what I've written is tremendously exciting but imo it's what she damn well deserved. This didn't actually answer your question in that I don't think this is what would have happened; Glee demonstrated that they had no desire to follow through on Santana's story with the care it deserved. But it is what I'd like to think.

The Fleetwood Mac singer is the latest icon to have her likeness celebrated in doll form as part of Mattel's Barbie series of famous musicians, along with Tina Turner, Gloria Estefan, David Bowie and Elvis Presley. It will be officially released in November.

Mattel says it designed the doll in honor of Nicks' 75th birthday, which was in May. It was inspired by her outfit on the cover of the 1977 album Rumours.

She told USA Today that after her first Fleetwood Mac tour she contacted a designer, Margi Kent, and drew her a stick figure wearing a handkerchief skirt and platform boots."I said to her, 'Margi, I want to wear this when I'm 60 because I know I'll be on stage when I'm 60,' even though I'd been in Fleetwood Mac all of eight months, and she said, 'OK,' and I went back in a week and by the time we did Rumours I had my beautiful black outfit," Nicks recalled.

Today, global music authority Billboard announced K-pop group sensation NMIXX will be joining the star-studded lineup for Billboard Latin Music Week, the longest-running and biggest Latin music industry gathering in the world. NMIXX will make history as the first K-pop group to participate in the event, and will be featured in an exclusive K-pop x Latin music panel. Celebrating its 35th anniversary, Billboard Latin Music Week returns with an unprecedented lineup of 60+ Latin stars spanning all genres. The five-day event will take place at The Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater from Oct. 14 - 18, 2024. K-pop girl group NMIXX will be featured in the K-pop Goes Latin with NMIXX panel, Billboard’s first-ever K-pop x Latin music conversation on Wednesday, October 16 to talk about how K-pop has exploded in the Latin market, and its future en español. 

“K-pop has cultivated a large, passionate fan base in Latin America, and now we're seeing popular K-pop artists like NMIXX embrace this by singing in Spanish. We are thrilled to welcome NMIXX as the first-ever K-pop artist at Latin Music Week, where their dynamic energy will enrich the event and forge new connections between our musical cultures,” said Leila Cobo, Billboard's Chief Content Officer for Latin/Español.

Celebrating its 35th anniversary, Billboard Latin Music Week has become a must-attend event for new, established and upcoming artists, executives and industry leaders alike. Billboard Latin Music Week will coincide with the 2024 Billboard Latin Music Awards, which will air on the Telemundo network. Please note, Latin Music Week tickets will not include access to the awards show this year. Instead, Billboard will host a special 35th year anniversary celebration on the evening of October 18 where INSIDER badge holders will receive exclusive invitations to this star-studded event. Closing out the packed week of events, Billboard will be partnering with Bresh to host the grand finale party of Billboard Latin Music Week. More details to come.

NMIXX made their explosive entrance to the K-pop scene in February 2022 and have been making waves on the global stage since. NMIXX introduced a new genre called MIXX POP, which is a sound unique to NMIXX that blends two or more genres into one song. Their debut single album, AD MARE, sold over 220K copies in the first week of release, marking the highest debut album sales by a girl group in K-pop history. They followed this with the release of their second single album ENTWURF.
